Putting The Power In Prowlers .. Micah Ranum .. Courtesy Of Breakdown Sports USA
01/25/2011
By: Tim Kolehmainen, Breakdown Sports USA
Q and A with hard-hitting Thief River Falls senior Micah Ranum
There’s a certain toughness that comes with playing high school hockey in northwestern Minnesota and it’s certainly in no short supply in Thief River Falls’ senior Micah Ranum.
The self-described power forward leads the Prowlers in scoring again this winter (14 goals, 16 assists, 30 points through 16 games) after scoring a team-best 24 goals as a junior.
We caught up with Ranum recently to ask him about the Prowlers’ chances in Section 8A this winter, his training routine for hockey and playing a high school football game through the threat of polar bear attacks.Question: You graduated a terrific All-State goaltender in Zane Gothberg and some other key players from last year's team. Will that change the way your team prepares for games this year, and if so, how? What additional responsibilities might you have to take on?
Answer: I believe it puts more pressure on our goalies for this year having high expectations after having a hockey player like Zane. Everyone has to pick up their own game to try and make up for what we lost last year, but we also have many experienced players who have worked hard to step it up and some new guys to be able to advance from where we ended up last year. Everybody has a goal of making the state tournament this year. My co-captain, Matt Audette, is sidelined with an injury, but he still a leader off-ice and he have to lead with my effort on-ice.
Q: Give me a short scouting report on yourself as a player. What are your strengths?
A: I am a power type forward, my speed and strength gets me to the net and keeps me there. It allows me to be a physical presence in all ends of the rink.

Iron-Man Act Garrett Schmitz Never Gets Tired Of Playing Hockey .. Courtesy of Grand Forks Herald
By: Greg DeVillers, Grand Forks Herald
RED LAKE FALLS, Minn. — Garrett Schmitz never gets tired of playing hockey. He does, however, admit to getting physically tired on the ice at times.
“I like playing a lot,” the Red Lake Falls High School junior said. “I do get tired sometimes. But I’m getting used to it.”
Schmitz is part of the iron-man unit that has helped the Eagles start the season with nine wins in their first 14 games.
There are only 14 players on the RLF varsity roster, several of whom are inexperienced freshmen. As a result, Eagles coach Brad Kennett has relied heavily on eight skaters and one goaltender.
“We get the freshmen out there a lot more against the teams that are more our size and caliber,” Kennett said. “Against the high-end teams, we’ve played a very limited number of guys. Right now, we’ve been fortunate enough to stay healthy. And about half the teams on our schedule are in the same boat as us, counting on a few guys to play a lot. We have probably 6-7 guys who would fit in somewhere on almost any team in Section 8A.”
Schmitz and Robbie Glass are the top Red Lake Falls defensemen. Against the better teams, Kennett said, Schmitz rarely leaves the ice and Glass also plays almost all the time.
The situation is similar on the lines.
Senior Andrew Jahnke centers Dylan Zutz and Max Martocq, a foreign exchange student from France. That trio plays every other shift. Joe Berberena centers the second shift, with four players alternating at the wings.
The Jahnke line has been the most productive. Jahnke paces the offense (12 goals, 22 assists — 34 points), followed by Zutz (16-17 — 33). Martocq has 28 points. Berberena has contributed 13 points. The Eagles also get big offensive production from Schmitz (29 points, including a team-leading 20 goals) and Glass (2-13 — 15).

Warroad Wins Eighth Straight In 3-0 Shut Out Over Crookston .. Photo / Feature Courtesy Of Minnesota Hockey Hub
By Tim Kolehmainen, Breakdown Sports USA
This wasn’t the way it was supposed to be.
Heading into mid-December, powerful Warroad was in an unusual position. The Warriors had lost four straight games to fall below .500 (3-4-0), a benchmark not common in Warroad varsity hockey. The team was struggling to score goals, with back-to-back shutout losses at the hands of Bemidji and East Grand Forks.
That’s when Warroad turned up the defense.
Since that point, the Warriors have ripped off eight straight victories, the latest a 3-0 shutout of host Crookston Saturday night at the shiny Crookston Sports Center.
“It’s a skill just like stickhandling and passing the puck, preparing yourself for a game mentally,” said coach Albert Hasbargen. “We have some young guys who are learning that and some old guys who had to find it again.”
