Warroad 3 Duluth Marshall 2 OT
It was a match-up of Class A powerhouses as the Hilltoppers of Duluth-Marshall visited The Gardens Arena in Warroad last Friday night. And like usual, it was a donnie-brooke from the start.
This contest was well worth the price of admission as both teams displayed the talents that have earned both programs Top 5 ratings (Duluth #1, Warroad #4).
Both clubs skated to a scoreless opening stanza. Early into the second frame, junior forward Zach Mausolf of Duluth-Marshall scored on a power play just :57 in. The game remained 1-0 until the third period when senior forward, David Hafferty of Duluth-Marshall scored a shorthanded goal to make it 2-0, at 9:23.
The Hilltoppers carried their 2-0 advantage into the final minute when Warroad pulled their goalie. At 16:44, senior forward Jeremy Hahn finally scored for the Warriors to make it a 2-1 game. As time was running out, junior defenseman Tai Larson put a shot on net from a sharp angle that trickled into the net, with 0.1 remaining, that tied the contest and forced overtime.
In overtime, Warroad picked up a penalty; however, junior forward Dane Shaugabay decided the game with a shorthanded tally at 3:44. Warroad outshot Duluth Marshall 29-21. For Warroad, Hahn and Shaugabay each had 1 goal, 1 assist. For Duluth Marshall, Mausolf had 1 goal, 1 assist.
