The upstart Bemidji Lumberjacks (10-6-0), have turned heads this season under second-year coach, Wade Chiodo. The Lumberjacks have knocked off some powerhouses this season in Duluth Marshall, Grand Rapids and the St. Cloud schools of Cathedral and Apollo. The Bears (8-7-1) have trucked through the schedule playing some solid hockey. Goaltender Alex Lyon has carried the lions share yet has came up shining. Look for Bemidji to get a ton of pucks and traffic to the net tonight as the Bears host the Lumberjacks in Baudette Arena.

Wadena-Deer Creek (6A) at Walker-H-A (8A), 7PM | Walker Area Comm Center

Wadena D-C invade the Walker Community Arena tonight. Spoke with a business partner of mine who informed me the Walker-H-A Wolves had blown up last weeks quick bits and displayed them at the rink. Northern Lakes (6A) at Park Rapids Area (8A), 7:30PM | Park Rapids Community Center

Northern Lakes come into Land of the Panthers at (7-6-0). They travel to the hornet's nest at Park Rapids Comm Center. The Panthers play solid hockey in their hometown barn and usually make it difficult for out-of-town teams. The Panthers (12-5-1) come in on a 2-game winning streak while taking five of the last six contests. Look for this to be a high scoring affair as both teams like to hit the back of the net.

East Grand Forks (8A) at Red Lake Falls (8A), 7:30PM | Cardin-Hunt Arena

Won't need to pump up this Section 8A affair tonight as the Green Wave, under head coach Cory Chupka, invade Red Lake Falls tonight. EGF (6-10-0) is coming off a 2-game losing streak to powerhouses in the likes of the Roseau Rams and Grand Forks (ND) Central. Each of these two teams are at the top of the standings in the respective state rankings (GF Central is currently #1 in North Dakota). After shocking Section 8A and all of Minnesota hockey in their donnie-brook with the Warroad Warriors two weeks ago tonight, the Green Wave have dropped the last two. Red Lake Falls, under Brad Kennett, have played well at times this season but currently have dropped 5 of 6 games. The Cardin-Hunt Arena will be rocking tonight as the Polk County foes vie for bragging rights heading into Section 8A seedings.

Pirates head coach, Jon Bittner, has these boys of Crookston playing tough, rugged Section 8A hockey. Crookston (2-11-0) are coming in on a 5-game skid, but look for the Pirates to battle their foes of Section 6A in the Detroit Lakes Lakers. The Lakers come into tonights clash at 11-2-0 under head coach Chris Denardo. The Mid-State Conference Lakers are currently on a 11-game unbeaten streak and will look to extend that tonight versus Crookston. The Lakers have lost both of their games on home ice this season.

Josh Erickson scored two goals as Roseau beat East Grand Forks Senior High 3-1 at the East Grand Forks Civic Center on Saturday.

It was an improved effort for the Green Wave, who lost 12-2 to the Rams earlier this season.

“We came out pretty hard in the second and third periods,” Senior High coach Cory Chupka said. “We couldn’t capitalize on the chances we had. We kept working and created a lot of opportunities, but we couldn’t find the back of the net.”

Jake Useldinger scored the lone goal for Senior High.

Roseau goalie Ethan Kvidt stopped 22 shots, while Senior High’s Hunter Aubol made 25 saves.

Hockey fans at the East Grand Forks Civic Center on Tuesday night were keeping close tabs on the much-anticipated World Junior Championship gold-medal game between U.S.A. and Canada.

The Americans eventually shocked Canada in overtime, but it was the East Grand Forks Senior High boys hockey team that pulled off the first stunner of the night.

The Green Wave, behind sophomore goalie Hunter Aubol’s 32 saves, held on for a 2-1 win over No. 3-ranked Warroad.

“It’s been about two years since anyone in the section has beaten Warroad,” Senior High coach Cory Chupka said. “Our guys continue to take steps forward. They showed tonight that they can win against a quality team.”

The Warriors dropped to 9-2, while the Green Wave improved to 5-9.

“That’s the biggest win in my hockey career,” said Aubol, who was starting his fifth game of the season. “We knew we had to play hard. We knew they were going to come hard . . . it’s Warroad.”

The Green Wave, who were outshot 33-24, never trailed.

Senior Jake Useldinger scored a goal at 13 minutes, 47 seconds of the first period. With four seconds left on a power play, Useldinger came into the offensive zone along the right side and tucked a shot to the short side, underneath the stick of Warroad goalie Shawn Storey.

After a scoreless second period, Senior High spread the lead to 2-0 with a fortunate bounce. With eight minutes left in the third period, Casey Ristau attempted a centering pass to Zack Lawdermilt from the end line. The pass managed to knock off the skates of Storey and into the net for the eventual game-winner.

“(Senior High) out-worked us,” Warroad coach Albert Hasbargen said. “You aren’t going to win many games if you don’t win the little battles and the little races. We had some scoring chances, but not enough. That comes with not winning many battles.”

The Warriors wouldn’t go quietly. Just as Warroad pulled its goalie with 1:27 remaining, UND-recruit Brock Nelson punched home a rebound to make it 2-1.

Warroad put on pressure for much of the remaining 87 seconds. Warroad spent the final 26 seconds in the Senior High zone, but Aubol didn’t falter.

“The puck was really bouncing around,” Chupka said. “The kids kept their cool, both on the ice and on the bench.

“Hunter Aubol stepped up, obviously, making those saves at the end. He’s battling and competing.”

After spending most of the season in a three-goalie rotation, Aubol has played well in two straight games.

“He’s just getting more confident,” Chupka said. “He’s doing the fundamentals and giving us a chance to win in the third period.”

It was Warroad’s first loss to a Class A opponent this season.

“We’ve got to be mentally ready every time we step on the ice,” Hasbargen said.

Former Warroad Warrior, T.J. Oshie, Is Featured On USA Hockey Website .. "Oshie’s hopes to bring Olympic spotlight back to Warroad, MN"

Warroad, Minn., may not be very large, yet it carries an outsized representation in U.S. Olympic hockey circles.

Home to 1,700 people and perched on the southwest shoreline of Lake of the Woods in northern Minnesota, Warroad is home to three Olympic goal medal winners and at least five more who represented the United States on the ice.

And 22-year-old St. Louis Blues center T.J. Oshie hopes to become the latest on the list.

“There are a lot of Olympians from Warroad and they talked to me about it and told me I’d be there some day,” said Oshie, who won two Class A state championships while at Warroad High School. “Henry Boucha, he’s my cousin, he talked to me quite a bit about it and showed me his [1972] silver medal and that was pretty special.”

Warroad also is home to 1960 gold medal winners Bill Christian and brother, Roger. Bill’s son, Dave, was a member of the 1980 Miracle on Ice gold medalists. The Christian family also manufactured hockey sticks of the same name in Warroad for 35 years. The town secured its first female Olympian last week when Warroad native Gigi Marvin was named to the U.S. women’s Olympic team.

Oshie has experienced a whirlwind 16 months as he jumped from college (University of North Dakota) to the pros (St. Louis Blues) and now stands poised to represent his country at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

“It’s unbelievable. I never thought I’d be here, especially at this age, but I’m very proud,” said Oshie, who skated with 19 other forward prospects at the Team USA orientation camp in suburban Chicago during August. “It’s surprising with all the caliber of players here, but everyone is bonding very well and everyone gets along.”

Oshie is coming off a successful, if slightly abbreviated rookie season with the Blues.

Hampered by an ankle injury early in 2008-09, he went on to appear in 57 regular season games and made increasingly bigger contributions as the season progressed.

He closed with 14 goals and 25 assists for 39 points. Fourteen points came in the Blues’ final 15 games as St. Louis reached the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2004. In 30 games so far this season, Oshie has 18 points (7-11).

A popular YouTube video featured Oshie’s punishing, but clean hits on Columbus winger Rick Nash last March. And he’s so popular with Blues fans that his No. 74 jersey is a top-seller, reportedly three-times better than his closest teammate.

He frequently updates a Twitter page and said prior to the orientation camp that he “hoped to make Blues fans proud.” And his Facebook page has nearly 2,800 followers. It includes a 2005 clip from Oshie’s high school days when he won a faceoff, then earned an assist on a game-winning goal in the Minnesota state championship game.

Shortly thereafter, the centerman was the Blues’ top pick (24th overall) in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

But pro play was put on hold as Oshie opted for a college career at North Dakota. He put in three seasons and 129 games for the Fighting Sioux, collecting 59 career goals and 83 assists for 142 points. North Dakota reached the NCAA Frozen Four three straight times with Oshie on board.

He also has two previous associations with Team USA, including seven games in the 2006 World Junior Championships, where he had one goal.

Earlier this year, he played nine games in the Men’s World Championships, picking up one goal and a pair of assists.

“It’s great. I love the guys to death and we’re all good friends,” Oshie said. “There’s a lot of good friendships and we only get to hang out at these events, so it’s fun.”

And he’d like nothing better than to renew some of those summertime camp acquaintances in Vancouver.
