Move over John Mayasich.

Your official state record for most goals in a boys high school hockey game is about to fall. And it's not even close.

Max Oshie, a star forward for the Warroad Warriors, scored 12 goals in a game on Jan. 6, 1948, as his squad defeated Thief River Falls 16-2, according to a news account of the contest.

That collection of four hat tricks easily tops what was thought to be the record of seven goals scored by Eveleth's Mayasich in a state tournament semifinal game in 1951.

Turns out, Mayasich said today, that seven was never really his highest one-game record anyway. He said he scored 11 goals in a 23-0 thumping of visiting Duluth Central in 1950. And it's a feat that he is not proud of, saying, "You should never do that against a team. It's embarrassing."

As for that and other moments of greatness, Mayasich shrugs them off. "I don't have anything, articles or anything, about records in high school," he said in a telephone interview from Eveleth.

"I don't consider them my records. I had good linemates and a good team."

Just this season, three other players scored seven in a game: Ben Hanowski of Little Falls, Michael Unzen of Moose Lake and Dan Billiar of Mankato East.

When it comes to verifying Oshie's goal barrage as the certifiable record, Ellen Giloy of the Minnesota State High School League said, "I would probably just need a copy of the clipping" from the Warroad Pioneer, adding that the MSHSL considers newspaper reports as "sound sources" for determining records.

Giloy said how the MSHSL collects records is simple. "The only way we hear about them is when people report them."

The Pioneer's coverage of Oshie's remarkable game came to the attention of startribune.com after one of his classmates read Monday's online report about this season's trio of seven-goal scorers.

In the game, played outdoors in Warroad, Oshie scored 11 of his goals against Thief River Falls netminder Ralph Engelstad. Yes, that's the same person whose name adorns the lavish hockey arena at the University of North Dakota.

While Oshie died in 2006 at age 78, his legacy lives on in the NHL. Great-nephew T.J. Oshie, a standout at Warroad in high school and North Dakota in college, plays for the St. Louis Blues.

WARROAD, Minn. — If Warroad High School had any perceived weakness entering this boys hockey season, it was in goal.

Senior Jason Goldsmith, with just two periods of varsity action to his credit entering the season, erased any doubts in a hurry with three shutouts in Warroad’s first four games.

The steady play of Goldsmith (1.55 goals-against average, .911 save percentage) and the dynamic top line of juniors Brock Nelson and Brett Hebel and senior Dane Shaugabay are among the reasons why the Warriors are favored to repeat as Minnesota Section 8 champion.

The Warriors, 23-2, enter Thursday’s section quarterfinals at The Gardens Arena in Warroad with a 13-0 record at home, the No. 1 seed in the section and a 10-0 record against Section 8A opponents this season.

“Our record doesn’t surprise me,” Goldsmith said. “I think it surprised everyone else in the section and in the state, because they thought we lost a lot of guys from last year and would be down this year. We took that as momentum for us going into this year.”

It’s worked.

Goldsmith has provided the steady goaltending coach Albert Hasbargen was looking for. The power line of Nelson (35 goals), Shaugabay (25) and Hebel (17) has combined for 77 goals, more than three a game.

Newcomer Joey Olson has joined defensive holdovers Tai Larson, Eric Milbridge, Michael Pieper and Carson Gray to provide help in front of Goldsmith. Chris Sylvester (17 goals) and Micky Knox (13) have helped balance the attack.

“Our scoring has been spread out pretty good,” Hasbargen said. “Even if one team tries to shut down one line, we have others who can score.”

The depth of Warroad extends to the coaching staff. Two of Hasbargen’s assistants, Bruce Olson and Dennis Fermoyle, have won Minnesota state titles as head coaches, joining Hasbargen in that distinction.

Nelson, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound center, is drawing considerable interest from college recruiters, though he says he’s always been a UND fan. He has not made a verbal commitment.

Nelson has more than doubled his goal output from last year (15) to this year.

“He just has a knack with the puck,” Hasbargen said. “He seems like he’s got stickem tape on both sides of his stick blade. He’s a kid who can find the twine, something you don’t coach.”

Warroad’s biggest challenge could come from No. 2 seed Thief River Falls, which lost 3-1 and 5-1 to Warroad this season. The Prowlers are spearheaded by the section’s top goalie in junior Zane Gothberg (1.49 average, .937 save percentage).

“Any time you’ve got a boy who can win a game by himself, that makes the team pretty dangerous,” Hasbargen said of Gothberg and the Prowlers.

Nelson said he expected a good season after the Warriors placed third in last year’s state tournament.

“We’ve had a lot of guys step up and play pretty awesome,” Nelson said. “Hopefully we can make it down to state again and win it all.”

2009 Section 8A Girl's Championship: Warroad Nips Rams To Earn 2nd Berth To Minnesota State High School Tournament

The Warroad girls hockey team has a long history of heartbreak in the Minnesota Section 8A final.
A couple of eighth-graders might not know anything about it, and they weren’t about to become part of it.
Lisa Marvin gave Warroad an early lead and classmate Kayla Gardner gave the Warriors a trip to the state tournament by scoring an overtime goal in a 2-1 victory over rival Roseau for the Section 8A championship in the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

Gardner’s wrist shot from the slot at 4 minutes, 43 seconds of the extra frame sent the entire Warroad team on the ice to celebrate its third overtime win against the Rams this season.
This one meant the most, though.
Warroad advances to the state tournament for the second time in program history. This section final was usually the roadblock for the Warriors, who had lost in eight of their last nine state-qualifying games.
“Our girls just had the belief and we got a bounce at the end,” Warroad coach David Marvin said. “Roseau is a great hockey team. Either team could have won.”
Roseau, which beat Warroad 3-2 in the section championship last season, ended its season at 22-6. All six losses were by one goal with four coming in overtime.
“Everyone could see what this game was: Two great teams going at it,” Roseau coach Brian Bergstrom said. “What do you do? Our kids have nothing to hang their heads about.”
Although the game featured several high-end offensively talented players, it turned into a defensive battle.
Marvin, a forward, gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead with 3:19 left in the first period. Brook Story’s attempt from the slot trickled to the right side of the goal, where Marvin was able to bang it in.
Roseau tied it up in the second.
Moments after the Rams killed off a 5-on-3 power play that lasted 1:29, Kylie Lane came out of the penalty box and buried a shot from the right circle. That goal came with just 46 seconds left in the middle frame.
After a scoreless third period, Gardner had a great chance to finish it early in overtime. Gardner was stationed alone at the top of the crease and took a pass from behind the net, but Chelsey Froseth (28 saves) turned it aside.
Gardner didn’t miss on her next opportunity.
“The puck just came out in front and I saw the goalie was off to the side a little bit,” she said. “So I tried to put it on the other side. It feels great.”

Crookston Pirates Make It 3 Straight With Win Over Red Lake Falls

Crookston made it three consecutive victories on Tuesday evening with a Section 8A win over Red Lake Falls at the Crookston Civic Arena.

The Pirates recorded all three goals in the second period. Brady Langlois and Jarret Butenhoff each recorded a goal and an assist in the contest. Crookston improved to 11-12 on the season and 6-6 in the section. Red Lake Falls fell to 11-11-1 and 7-9 in Section 8A play.

Alan Mart put the Pirates on the board at the 7:49 mark of the second period following a scoreless first. Zach Mercil and Alex Edevold assisted on the goal. The game-winning tally came off a shorthanded goal from Langlois at the 10:45 mark. The final goal for Crookston came at the 13:07 mark of the period from Butenhoff.

The Eagles made it 3-1 at the 14:51 mark of the third period with a goal by Cody Hanson but that was as close as they would come.

Matt Grove made 21 saves in net for the Pirates, while Red Lake Falls’ Zach Page stopped 34 shots.

The regular season comes to a close on Friday for Crookston when it hosts Park Rapids at 7:30 p.m.

The Panthers are 5-3-2 in Section 8A play and are one spot ahead of the Pirates in the standings.

Section 8A Girl's Championship Game: Warroad - Roseau Hockey Rivalry Continues .. This Time The Girl's Hit Center Stage In Northern Tradition

Northwest Minnesota's most legendary rivalry continues tonight at the Civic Center Arena in East Grand Forks, Minn.

There might be a few differences. You won't see the FOX Sports North television semi-trailers adjecent to the friendly confines of the Zamboni door nor will you see the likes of 2,500 fans in attendance, or maybe you will.

What you will see tonight is two very powerful girls hockey programs battling for Roseau County supremecy and the 2009 Section 8A representative in the Minnesota State Girl's High School Hockey Championships next week at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.

Roseau has won 10 of 11 games dating back to January 13th with the only blemish coming at the hands of the Warriors in a 3-2 overtime affair in front of a capacity crowd at the Rams Sports Center.

Warroad, who knocked off East Grand Forks, 7-1 on Tuesday night, comes into the contest with a 24-2-0 record on the season. Warroad's only losses coming to Breck, 3-0, back on December 29, 2008, and Duluth in a 1-0 affair on January 16 on holy grail home ice of The Gardens Arena in Warroad.

Roseau defeated Park Papids, 10-0, in the quarter-final round on February 12, then knocked off the perenniel powerhouse Crookston Pirates, 5-1, on Tuesday night at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

Roseau boosts a 22-5-0 record with losses to Warroad (2), Edina, Hill-Murray and Crookston.

Warroad Co-Head Coach, David "Izzy" Marvin, is excited for the match-up tonight in East Grand Forks.

"It's going to be a great hockey game tonight with two programs that know a lot about each other," the third-year Warrior coach continued. "In both overtime wins this year it's came down to the bounce of the puck. In the first game, Roseau was putting on the heat and hit a post then we came down and scored the game-winner. In the second game, we caught them on a line change after a dump in on the net. Both games were fantastic."

Marvin credited both programs starting from the early youth years that has led to this fierce rivalry recentely.

"Both teams are so fimiliar with each other that it comes down to a bounce here or some puck luck there. There is mutual respect for each program and it's a great rivalry here."

Warroad's other Co-Head Coach is Derrick Comstock. Comstock has been the constant main stay in the Warriors program in all ten years of it's existance in Minnesota State High School Hockey. Other head coaches at Warroad have included Ron Tveit, Bruce Elson and Scott Knutson.

Warroad has participated in the Section championships round in nine-consecutive seasons. Moorhead knocked Warroad out in the earlier rounds in it's inaugural year back in 2000.

Izzy also credited that growing up both programs always seemed to make the MAHA State Championships.

"There is no doubt that has added to the competitiveness of both programs. We know each other so well it's like back in the old days when the North Stars (Minnesota) and Blackhawks (Chicago) would meet in the play-offs. Both teams knew each other so well it was usually decided by the bounce of the puck."

Roseau boosts four players over or near 50 points on the season (Mary Loken, 36g+28a=64 pts.; Kylie Lane, 24g+38=62 pts; Amy Olsen, 25g+26a=51 pts.; and Abby Ness, 29g+20a=49 pts.).

Warroad has four players over the half-century mark on the season (Karly Sylvester, 33g+27a=60 pts.; Layla Marvin, 16g+42a=58 pts.; Brook Story, 30g+25a=55 pts.; and Lisa Marvin, 22g+30a=52 pts.).

Both programs are very close in the statistical categories of goals scored and goals against. Roseau holds the edge in goals scored with 156 on the season to Warroad's 137 but the Warriors hold the defensive edge 23-35.

Both showcase very talented goaltenders as well. Roseau's senior netminder, Chelsey Froseth, has fantastic numbers with 28 goals against, a 1.28 GAA, and a .923 save % on the year.

Warroad's youthful sophomore, Shelby Amsley-Benzie, has only allow 22 goals against, a 0.85 GAA and a robust .954 save % on the season. Amsley-Benzie is one of the top goaltenders in the state, as is Froseth.

Roseau also has the braintrust in head coach, Brian Bergstrom, and assistants Jeff Olson and Patty Elsmore.

The puck drops tonight at 7 p.m. sharp at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

Bemidji Stops 2-Game Skid; Lumberjacks Knock Off Detroit Lakes 6-2

The Bemidji Lumberjacks hockey team broke a two-game skid Tuesday to hand Detroit Lakes at 6-2 setback on the losers ice.

Bemidji scored three times in the first period to take a 3-1 lead and expanded a 4-2 advantage with two in the third.

Jesse Nemgar led the way with two goals and three assists for five points.

Jared Bergquist, Joe Welle, Luke Burns and Kris Maggert scored the other goals.

Welle’s and Maggert's came on power plays in the first and third periods.

Derek Dudgeon had only 13 stops. DL’s Chris Widne had 36.

The win lifted Bemidji to 12-11-1. The Jacks close their regular season tomorrow hosting Coleraine at Nymore Gardens.

The B Team also won 2-1 on goal by Steve Heller and Jordan Manick. Axel Osborn rejected 12 shots. DL had 33 stops.

Kent Peterson scored the game-winning goal 23 seconds into overtime to lift Thief River Falls over East Grand Forks Senior High on Tuesday.

Thief River Falls led 2-1 entering the third period. Macauley Useldinger scored 46 seconds into the final period on assists from Jake Useldinger and Henry Gutierrez to force overtime.

“We battled back from a 2-1 deficit and got the opportunity to go into overtime,” Senior High coach Cory Chupka said. “We worked hard, we battled along the boards and we’re heading into the section tournament with a good feeling.”

Lucas Dillon scored the lone goal of the first period for Thief River Falls. Senior High’s Nick Ohman and the Prowlers’ Peterson picked up second-period tallies.

“They have some skill up front, but for the most part I thought we played pretty well,” Chupka said. “The shots didn’t indicate how we played.”

Kyle Storbakken had 33 saves for the Green Wave, while Thief River Falls’ Zane Gothberg had nine stops.

Senior High dropped to 9-14-1. The Minnesota Section 8A tournament begins Feb. 26.

Warroad Cruises To A Solid 7-2 Victory Over Bemidji Lumberjacks At Nymore; Warrior's Dane Shaugabay Explodes For Hat Trick

The Warroad Warriors ended Bemidji’s long trip through the top ten of the Class A hockey standings Friday night, spanking the Jacks 7-2 before a good turnout at the Nymore Arena. It included a sizeable turnout of Warroad fans.

Warroad had taken the first meeting 7-1 at home.

The visitors looked every bit like a potential state champion raising its record to 22-1.

Bemidji dropped to 11-11-1 with games at Detroit Lakes Tuesday and at home with Coleraine Thursday, two games it figures to win.

The Warriors dominated the game out shooting Bemidji 44-19 .

They scored four times in the second period to take a 5-0 lead and started the clock running for a four minute stretch in the third after moving to a 7-1 lead.

Bemidji turned the clock off four minutes later with its second goal of the night.

Dane Shaugabay had a hat trick while Micky Knox scored twice and Brock Nelson and Chris Sylvester once.

Lucas Phillips and Steve Heller had the Bemidji goals, both in the final period.

The hard hitting game drew 14 whistles, seven on each team.

Bemidji was 1-7 on the power play while the winners scored twice and added a short handed goal.

Bemidji stayed close for a period though out shot 13-6.

Knox had his first goal at 6:12 at the end of an odd man rush, one of many Derek Dudgeon would face during the night.

But Warroad continued the barrage, out shooting Bemidji 15-4 in the second period.,

Knox added his second goal in the first two minutes and Shaugabay followed with his first pair two minutes apart, the first on a power play with Lucas Phillips gone for tripping.

The second followed a 15 minute delay to replace a sheet of plastic discharged by hard hit at the south end of the rink..

Nelson completed the period with a short handed goal at the end of a 2 on 1 rush with teammate Carson Gray gone for holding.

Phillips put Bemidji on the board to start the final stanza on a power play but Shaugabay matched that on a Warroad power play three minutes later and Sylvester’s tally at 9:47 started running time.

Heller ended it at 13:27 with his first varsity goal with Rylee Curb and Joe Welle getting the feeds.

Warroad held a 16-9 shots bulge in the stanza with Brett Dokken playing the final four minutes, making four stops.

He and Dudgeon ended with 37. Jason Goldsmith had only 17 for the Warriors.

Warroad also took the B Game 2-0, scoring twice in the first period though piling up a 31-15 shots advantage.

Jeremiah Graves played an excellent game in goal for Bemidji. Shawn Storey was the Warroad net minder.

The B Team dropped to 14-8-1.

Warroad Surges To Beat Grand Forks (ND) Central; Warriors Overcome 5-1 Deficit In 3rd To Tally 5 Unanswered Goals For Come-From-Behind Victory

As a longtime resident of a place that calls itself Hockeytown USA, Warroad boys hockey coach Albert Hasbargen has seen plenty of strange things on the ice.

But Hasbargen said what happened Tuesday night trumps them all.

“I haven’t seen anything like that before,” Hasbargen said.

“Unbelievable.”

Warroad scored five goals in the final period to complete a 6-5 come-from-behind win over Grand Forks Central High School in nonconference play at Purpur Arena.

Warroad, 21-2, started the third period facing a 5-1 deficit.

But Dane Shaugabay scored on the power play at 2:01 of the final period to start the spree. Brett Hebel and Brock Nelson added two goals in the next 11 minutes to sink the Knights.
Hebel scored the game-winner with 3:53 remaining.

“We knew we played an awful (second) period,” Hasbargen said. “In the third period, we played hard and things went in the net. The adrenaline gets going, and we started believing we could do it.”

It was a drastic turnaround from the first two periods. After the first 34 minutes, the Warriors looked to be simply trying to stave off a blowout.

The Knights scored the game’s first four goals and led 5-1 after two periods.

Central’s Jake Plutowski recorded a hat trick, while Jordy Aamot and Casey Purpur also had goals.

Aamot’s tally just 10 seconds into the second period appeared to be the game-changer. Aamot scored shorthanded on a breakaway.

“That seemed to drain all of our emotion,” Hasbargen said. “That’s common of a shorthanded goal. We’ve done it to other teams. They score like that and it take a lot out of you.”

But behind the top line of Nelson, Shaugabay and Hebel, the Warriors had enough firepower to respond.

That trio was responsible for all six Warroad goals. It’s nothing new for the Warriors, as Nelson has a team-leading 55 points this season, followed by Shaugabay with 47 and Hebel with 44.

“They’re good hockey players,” Central coach Tony Bina said. “If you leave them room to operate, they’re going to bury it on you.”

The Knights dropped to 13-6.

“I think maybe we got a little overconfident,” Bina said. “We just didn’t stay focused on the little things that win games. We were too offensive-minded and didn’t take responsibility in our end like we did in the first two periods.

“This is a tough loss, but it’s something to learn from. We’ve given up leads like this twice now.

But we’re not going to let it happen a third time. We just won’t.”

EGF Green Wave Lower The Boom On Kittson-Central In 7-1 Victory In The Lone Game Of Section 8A On 1/29/09

The East Grand Forks Green Wave boys hockey team defeated the Kittson-Central Wolfpack last night. 7-1. More importantly, the win advanced their Section 8A record to 6-3-0 and overall record to 9-10-1.

After two consecutive losses this past weekend to Section 1A teams (Rochester Lourdes 7-4 / Faribault 5-2) down in southern Minnesota, EGF bounced back in the left column with a convincing , balanced attack Thursday night in front of a partisan crowd at the Civic Center.

The win was pivotal for EGF getting back on track for the stretch run of the 2009 hockey season. After non-Section 8A games next week to Grand Forks Central and Moorhead, the Green Wave will battle section foes Warroad, Crookston and Thief River. As usual, the final game against TRF on February 17, will have seeding implications like it does each mid-February for the Section 8A tourney held in Warroad this year.

EGF was paced by Casey Risteau' 3-assist performance. Jake Useldinger continued his scoring prowess with a goal and two assists; Zack Srnsky 2 goals; Henry Gutierrez 2 goals; Tucker Poolman 1 goal, 1 assist; Nick Ohman 2 assists; Casey Clement 2 assists; Cory Mack with 1 goal; and Justin Call, Jake Greenwood and Christian Parker each picking up a lone assist.

Kittson-Central's Kellen Albrecht remained hot in the scoring column notching an unassisted goal late in the second period.

K-C's Alex Chaput had a very busy night steering aside 35 shots while Kyle Storbakken pushed away 14 of the 15 shots he faced.

EGF goes to 9-10-1 overall while Kittson-Central dropped to 1-7-0 in Section 8A and 4-12-1 overall.

Kittson-Central travels to Fargo-Shanley on Saturday night while EGF travels across the state border to battle Grand Forks Red River next Tuesday night at Cliff Purpur Arena.

Hats off to hundreds of Section 8A hockey fans for selecting Zane Gothberg of the Thief River Falls Prowlers and Craig Lindegard of the Kittson-Central Wolfpack as the January 2009 Section 8A Outstanding Performances.

Gothberg, who stole the show last February at the Section 8A semi-finals vs. the Warroad Warriors, with his Dominic Hasek-style performance. It was Mark McDonald's blast from the blueline early in overtime that ruined TRF's chances of getting back to the Xcel Energy Center for the second time in three years. But it was that performance that caught the eye of Section 8A onlookers and other players that pushed him to the forefront of NW Minnesota goaltending.

Craig Lindegard on the other hand, is one of the guys that have to face Gothberg during the long, cold Section 8A winter hockey schedule.

Lindegard, a big physical presence, had the weekend of his life back in early January in the win over the Bagley-Fosston Flyers and a tie to the feisty, Park Rapids Panthers. The crafty junior scored four goals and added three assists for a career-high (7) point performance against Bagley-Fosston, then notched a hat trick versus the Panthers.

Congratulations both Zane Gothberg and Craig Lindegard.

He wasn’t Doug Smail fast, but sophomore defenseman Matt Audette set a pretty good pace for Thief River Falls on Tuesday night at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

Audette scored his second goal of the season just 11 seconds into the game to lead the Prowlers to a 6-1 Minnesota Section 8A boys high school hockey victory over East Grand Forks Senior High.

Audette’s goal didn’t match in quickness the goal ex-UND star Smail scored five seconds into an NHL game in 1981, setting the league record for fastest goal to start a game.

But Audette’s goal put Senior High (8-10-1) into a hole from which it never recovered as the Prowlers (11-4-1) bounced back from a 5-1 loss at Warroad last Saturday with a strong showing from everyone Tuesday night.

Six different Prowler players scored goals and 10 players had points, led by Audette, Matt Lindquist, Lucas Dillon and Tyler Aandal, all with a goal and an assist.

The Olympic silver medalist and former Gophers defenseman is remembered as a fast, intelligent hockey player and a man of great integrity.

Hockey took Wally Olds from the rinks in Baudette, Minn., to the 1972 Olympic games in Japan. He skated with the pros in North America and Europe and then the "old-timers" in the Twin Cities.

"Hockey was his first love," said his daughter, Ashlee Olds, of St. Paul.

Health problems knocked him off the ice a few years back, she said. Olds died Jan. 11, two months after his colon cancer was diagnosed. He was 59.

"He was one of the finest Olympians we ever had," said Murray Williamson, who coached the 1972 silver-medal U.S. team. "He was a very intelligent gentlemen, very team-oriented and as even-mannered as you could get. "

On the ice, "he always knew where to get the puck and what to do with it when he got it," said fellow Olympic teammate Dick McGlynn.

"Wally wasn't intimidated by anything, because he thought everything through," McGlynn said. " He felt he could pit his physical and mental skills against anybody. He was very logical and calculating ... and understood the flow of the game."

"He was the real deal," said Craig Sarner, Olds' college roommate and his teammate on the Gophers and Olympic teams. "He was 6-foot-2, 210 and he could absolutely fly -- fast on his skates, shoot, pass. Plus, he was one of the smartest human beings I've ever met. He was a shark when it came to knowledge.

"
Olds studied electrical engineering at the University of Minnesota and graduated with honors.
Despite their Olympic medals, Olds and rest of the 1972 team came home to little fanfare. "We were shocked that no one seemed to know what we had done," McGlynn said.

But it was a different era. While the team won its medal in Japan, it was in the predawn hours in America, and most Americans were asleep. There was no delayed broadcast of the game, no Internet replays, McGlynn said. "In sports history," McGlynn said, "we're in a box someplace with a lot of dust on it up in the attic."

Olds and his teammates went on with their lives, McGlynn said.

Olds played for the New York Raiders, the Chicago Cougars and the Calgary Cowboys in the World Hockey Association from 1972 to 1976. Then he moved to Europe, where he played hockey in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and Norway.

With his professional hockey career behind him, Olds worked in the construction business in Long Island, N.Y., before returning to Minnesota in 1990 to coach one season at Breck High School in Golden Valley. After that, he worked as a sales engineer for several hydraulic testing equipment companies in the Twin Cities.

"He was a common guy," Sarner said. "But he had an uncommon amount of integrity."

In addition to his daughter, he is survived by his wife, Beth, of Marine on St. Croix; son, Craig of Maryland; his mother, Avis of Minneapolis, and a brother, Larry of Minneapolis. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Jacks Open Bemidji Community Arena With A Bang; Down LOW 3-2

The Bemidji High boys hockey team celebrated its first official game at the new Bemidji Community Arena Tuesday, defeating Section 8 foe Lake of the Woods 3-2.

The Jacks improved to 10-6-1 on the year with the historic win, played in front of a large and appreciative crowd.

The Jacks jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second period and then made the advantage stand up. LOW came back with the only goal of the third period to make it a one goal game, but could get no closer.

“At times we played great (Tuesday),” said BHS head coach Wade Chiodo, “and at other times we were flat and not moving out feet at all. In the end we came away with a big section win; we’ll take it and get out of here.”

BHS junior forward Mike Rees etched his name in the history books, scoring the first official high school varsity goal at the new arena. Will Bruestle found Rees at the side of the net and Rees ripped a quick wrist shot five hole past LOW goalie Alex Lyon at 6:32 of the first.

The visitors came back to tie the game about seven minutes later. Jordan Hanson connected on a long wrist shot from just a stride inside the blue line to even the count. The flipping puck fooled BHS goalie Derek Dudgeon, going over his shoulder to the back of the net.

The Jacks special teams took over in the second period and that turned out to be the difference maker in the game.

With LOW a man short due to a carry-over penalty from the first period, the Jacks struck quickly.

Joseph Welle took a blast from the point that was stopped by Lyon. But the Jacks’ Jared Bergquist was on the spot and scored on the rebound just 32 seconds into the period.

The Jacks then scored what turned out to be the game winner with just eight seconds remaining in the second. With the Jacks on the penalty kill, Rees was the recipient of a big play by junior forward Jesse Nemgar. Nemagar battled for the puck along the far boards, moving the puck toward the LOW goal.

After winning several battles he dug the puck loose and found Rees near the slot with a fine pass. Rees did the rest, giving the Jacks a 3-1 lead.

“(Nemgar) had an excellent game,” Chiodo said. “He made it happen on the short hander, battling and doing the dirty work. He found the open man and Rees did the rest.”

While the Jacks carried the play in most of the third, LOW battled back to make it a game. Jalen Stay scored following a breakaway attempt that hit the cross bar and rebounded wide. Stay as there to connect on the rebound at 4:52.

Dudgeon made the save of the game with just under four minutes left to preserve the win. LOW’s Josh Smart found himself alone in the slot staring at an open net. But Dudgeon flew across the crease and made a huge blocker save to deny LOW the tie.

The Jacks held a huge 33-16 shot advantage in the game.

“We have a rough stretch of games ahead of us against quality teams and then it’s playoff time,” said Chiodo. “We need to find a way to have a sustained effort for three periods. We’ll have to play that way or it’s going to be a tough haul for us.

“(Tuesday) we’d have a great shift, and then the next one of two shifts would be flat. We need to change that.”

The Jacks return to action Friday, heading north to take on state power Roseau.

Bemidji JV Downs LOW 3-2

The Lumberjack junior varsity made it a sweep on the night, winning 2-1.

A pair of second period goals from Nick Maggert and Kaleb Hanson propelled the Jacks to the win. Axel Osborn got the win in net for BHS, stopping 15 of 16 LOW shots.

The junior varsity improved to 10-6-1 as well.

NEWS RELEASE: Hockeytown USA Hosts 2nd Annual Section 8 All-Star Hockey Games On March 22-23, 2009 In Warroad

WARROAD MN, January 22. 2009 – The 2nd Annual Hockeytown Hockey Classic Section 8 All-Star Game will be held at The Gardens Arena on Sunday, March 22, and Monday, March 23rd 2009. Hosted by Warroad Memorial Arena Association (WMAA), the event will include both a girls’ and a boys’ game and the Section 8A all-stars competing against those from Section 8AA.

The teams will be comprised of the best varsity players from Section 8, regardless of age whom have been nominated by their coaches. The girls’ high school hockey game will begin at 6 p.m. and the boys will follow at 8 p.m. on both dates.

As Minnesota celebrated its annual Hockey Day, many bemoaned the dearth of rinks outdoors -- and the free time to play on them.

Cory Ellis and several of his St. Paul Johnson hockey teammates grew up experiencing the occasional outdoor practice or game. He could not recall, however, the last time he walked to a rink.

The Governors took part in Saturday's Hockey Day Minnesota, a daylong celebration of the sport, by playing Rochester John Marshall outdoors at Phalen Recreation Center. They arrived by foot, trudging the half-mile from Johnson High School to Phalen, where long ago the Governors played all their varsity games.

"We thought it was going to be a long, cold walk," Ellis said. "But it pumped us up to play. We walked down the street talking about how we're playing for our community."

Ellis scored two goals in the Governors' 4-0 defeat of the Rockets, delighting most of the estimated 1,800 fans who shrugged off cold temperatures and falling snow to enjoy a rare outdoor high school hockey game.

Dropping the ceremonial first puck was former Johnson coach Lou Cotroneo, who was an assistant from 1955 to '63, head coach from 1964 to '74 and one of a few people in attendance Saturday who experienced high school hockey as a primarily outdoor game.

The Governors' run of state titles in 1947, 1953, 1955 and 1963 earned them the nickname the "Grand Army of Phalen Creek." They were really weekend warriors, kids who grew up taking their lunch to the rink but took little time to stop skating and eat.

As a youth, Skip Peltier (Class of 1965) skated on Hastings Pond -- site of the current Johnson High School's athletic fields -- and at Phalen. Those frozen surfaces became melting pots where Peltier, his brothers and their buddies could skate with the Johnson varsity players they so admired.

"That builds tradition," said Peltier, who played on the 1963 title team. "You didn't want to be on the team that dropped the ball."
