Great Match-Ups Tonight In Section 8A For Games On Tuesday, January 12, 2010 .. The "Battle of Polk County" Takes Place As EGF Invades Crookston
The Lakers travel to Walker to take on the win-less Wolves. Regardless, the Wolves have been the talk of Mitch Hawkers, www.minnhockcom site. I will attach the link to the bottom is this message. The Wolves made the jump to Section 8A three seasons ago and have taken their lumps. I congratulate Coach Ben Brovold for keeping the boys playing hard and improving each game. But more so, for setting the table for future Walker-H-A athletes.

East Grand Forks at Crookston, 7:30 PM | Crookston Civic Arena
The Green Wave, coming off a tough week against the Warroad Warriors and Roseau Rams, find themselves atop the Section 8A standings this week. Congratulations to Coach Cory Chupka for his win over the Warriors one week ago today. And to the athletes of EGF who put together a great game plan and stellar goaltending by sophomore sensation, Hunter Aubol. EGF went 1-1 last week upsetting Warroad at the Civic Center, 2-1, then losing a tough battle versus the Roseau Rams, 3-1, last Saturday night in East Grand Forks.
Kittson-Central at Red Lake Falls, 7:00 PM | Cardin-Hunt Arena
Can Kittson-Central's senior sniper, Craig Lindegard, keep up his torrid pace of goal scoring tonight versus the hot, Red Lake Falls Eagles squad? Lindegard is tied for 2nd place in goal scoring for the state of Minnesota High School Hockey in either class. He trails St. Francis' scoring legend Joey Benik by only by only 9 goals going into this weeks action as the top goal getter in the State of Hockey.
Lake of the Woods at Fort Frances (CA), 7:30PM | Memorial Arena
Never have to worry about this rivalry. Just a quick excursion across the USA/Canada border tonight. This game is bragging rights to the "Battle of the Rainy River" as this is the only match-up this year between border foes. Look for LOW's senior goaltender, Alex Lyons, to keep this one close against the high flying Fort Frances club.
TRF @ Park Rapids, 7:30 PM | Park Rapids Comm Center
This could be the match-up of the night with the visiting Prowlers heading southwest to meet the Panthers. The outcome will have Section 8A seeding rights for the winner. A tough task ahead for the Boys of Park Rapids, facing Zane Gothberg, the #5-ranked Central Scouting list goaltenders of North American in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. But, like seasons past, the Panthers will be buzzing the net to try and enhance their Section 8A seeding considerations.

It was an improved effort for the Green Wave, who lost 12-2 to the Rams earlier this season.

EGF Green Wave Score A Head-Turner .. Sophomore goalie Aubol stops 32 shots to beat No. 3 Warroad .. Courtesy of Grand Forks Herald

By: Tom Miller, Grand Forks Herald
Hockey fans at the East Grand Forks Civic Center on Tuesday night were keeping close tabs on the much-anticipated World Junior Championship gold-medal game between U.S.A. and Canada.
The Americans eventually shocked Canada in overtime, but it was the East Grand Forks Senior High boys hockey team that pulled off the first stunner of the night.
The Green Wave, behind sophomore goalie Hunter Aubol’s 32 saves, held on for a 2-1 win over No. 3-ranked Warroad.
“It’s been about two years since anyone in the section has beaten Warroad,” Senior High coach Cory Chupka said. “Our guys continue to take steps forward. They showed tonight that they can win against a quality team.”
The Warriors dropped to 9-2, while the Green Wave improved to 5-9.
“That’s the biggest win in my hockey career,” said Aubol, who was starting his fifth game of the season. “We knew we had to play hard. We knew they were going to come hard . . . it’s Warroad.”
The Green Wave, who were outshot 33-24, never trailed.
Senior Jake Useldinger scored a goal at 13 minutes, 47 seconds of the first period. With four seconds left on a power play, Useldinger came into the offensive zone along the right side and tucked a shot to the short side, underneath the stick of Warroad goalie Shawn Storey.
After a scoreless second period, Senior High spread the lead to 2-0 with a fortunate bounce. With eight minutes left in the third period, Casey Ristau attempted a centering pass to Zack Lawdermilt from the end line. The pass managed to knock off the skates of Storey and into the net for the eventual game-winner.
“(Senior High) out-worked us,” Warroad coach Albert Hasbargen said. “You aren’t going to win many games if you don’t win the little battles and the little races. We had some scoring chances, but not enough. That comes with not winning many battles.”
The Warriors wouldn’t go quietly. Just as Warroad pulled its goalie with 1:27 remaining, UND-recruit Brock Nelson punched home a rebound to make it 2-1.
Warroad put on pressure for much of the remaining 87 seconds. Warroad spent the final 26 seconds in the Senior High zone, but Aubol didn’t falter.
“The puck was really bouncing around,” Chupka said. “The kids kept their cool, both on the ice and on the bench.
“Hunter Aubol stepped up, obviously, making those saves at the end. He’s battling and competing.”
After spending most of the season in a three-goalie rotation, Aubol has played well in two straight games.
“He’s just getting more confident,” Chupka said. “He’s doing the fundamentals and giving us a chance to win in the third period.”
It was Warroad’s first loss to a Class A opponent this season.
“We’ve got to be mentally ready every time we step on the ice,” Hasbargen said.

Former Warroad Warrior, T.J. Oshie, Is Featured On USA Hockey Website .. "Oshie’s hopes to bring Olympic spotlight back to Warroad, MN"

For Immediate Press Release
December 29, 2009
By Jack McCarthy
Special to USAHockey.com
Warroad, Minn., may not be very large, yet it carries an outsized representation in U.S. Olympic hockey circles.
Home to 1,700 people and perched on the southwest shoreline of Lake of the Woods in northern Minnesota, Warroad is home to three Olympic goal medal winners and at least five more who represented the United States on the ice.
And 22-year-old St. Louis Blues center T.J. Oshie hopes to become the latest on the list.
“There are a lot of Olympians from Warroad and they talked to me about it and told me I’d be there some day,” said Oshie, who won two Class A state championships while at Warroad High School. “Henry Boucha, he’s my cousin, he talked to me quite a bit about it and showed me his [1972] silver medal and that was pretty special.”
Warroad also is home to 1960 gold medal winners Bill Christian and brother, Roger. Bill’s son, Dave, was a member of the 1980 Miracle on Ice gold medalists. The Christian family also manufactured hockey sticks of the same name in Warroad for 35 years. The town secured its first female Olympian last week when Warroad native Gigi Marvin was named to the U.S. women’s Olympic team.
Oshie has experienced a whirlwind 16 months as he jumped from college (University of North Dakota) to the pros (St. Louis Blues) and now stands poised to represent his country at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
“It’s unbelievable. I never thought I’d be here, especially at this age, but I’m very proud,” said Oshie, who skated with 19 other forward prospects at the Team USA orientation camp in suburban Chicago during August. “It’s surprising with all the caliber of players here, but everyone is bonding very well and everyone gets along.”
Oshie is coming off a successful, if slightly abbreviated rookie season with the Blues.
Hampered by an ankle injury early in 2008-09, he went on to appear in 57 regular season games and made increasingly bigger contributions as the season progressed.
He closed with 14 goals and 25 assists for 39 points. Fourteen points came in the Blues’ final 15 games as St. Louis reached the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2004. In 30 games so far this season, Oshie has 18 points (7-11).
A popular YouTube video featured Oshie’s punishing, but clean hits on Columbus winger Rick Nash last March. And he’s so popular with Blues fans that his No. 74 jersey is a top-seller, reportedly three-times better than his closest teammate.
He frequently updates a Twitter page and said prior to the orientation camp that he “hoped to make Blues fans proud.” And his Facebook page has nearly 2,800 followers. It includes a 2005 clip from Oshie’s high school days when he won a faceoff, then earned an assist on a game-winning goal in the Minnesota state championship game.
Shortly thereafter, the centerman was the Blues’ top pick (24th overall) in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
But pro play was put on hold as Oshie opted for a college career at North Dakota. He put in three seasons and 129 games for the Fighting Sioux, collecting 59 career goals and 83 assists for 142 points. North Dakota reached the NCAA Frozen Four three straight times with Oshie on board.
He also has two previous associations with Team USA, including seven games in the 2006 World Junior Championships, where he had one goal.
Earlier this year, he played nine games in the Men’s World Championships, picking up one goal and a pair of assists.
“It’s great. I love the guys to death and we’re all good friends,” Oshie said. “There’s a lot of good friendships and we only get to hang out at these events, so it’s fun.”
And he’d like nothing better than to renew some of those summertime camp acquaintances in Vancouver.

Colossal Match-Up Tonight In Section 8A .. TRF (#7) Journey's To Warroad (#3) In A Clash Of The Titans..Nelson/Hebel & Co. Host The Zane Gothberg Show

By: Timothy Oshie (Publisher)
Section 8 has always generated the great match-ups throughout its existance. The major upsets, the stroll up and down, west to east on Minnesota State Highway's 34, 11, 3, 200, 2, and weathering the vicious NW Minnesota storms and blizzards.
Tonight, that tradition continues as the Thief River Falls Prowlers make the 88-mile trek to the friendly confines of the mystical, Gardens Arena in Warroad.
WARROAD WARRIORS:
Head Coach: Albert Hasbargen (5th Year)
Section: 8A
Conference: Mariucci
Enrollment: 335
Nickname: Warriors
Colors: Black, Gold
Assistant Coaches: Adrian Hasbargen, Bruce Olson, Dennis Fermoyle
Home Ice: The Gardens Arena, Warroad
08-09 Record: 28-3-0
State Titles: 4 (1994, Class A; 1996, Class A; 2003, Class A; 2005, Class A)
The Warriors are off to a fast 5-1-0 start with the only blemish to a revitalized Grand Rapids Thunderbirds program.
Warroad has made the trip south in March in 11 of the past 16 state tournaments, winning titles in 1994, 1996, 2003 and 2005. The only two other programs to capture Section 8A titles since the Class AA / A system came into effect in the 1993-94 season is East Grand Forks (1998, '99, 2001, '02) and Thief River Falls (2006). And again, despite losing excellent talent to graduation, it would be difficult not to consider the Warriors the favorites in Section 8A. There are holes to fill, however, including scoring depth behind that top line.
They are led by the dynamic scoring duo of Brett Hebel (9+9=18) and Brock Nelson (11+9=20). Junior Nick Stoskopf (4+5+9)rounds out one of most dangerous lines in Minnesota hockey. That line has accounted for 24 of the team’s 33 goals, while All-State defenseman Carson Gray (2+7=9) and blueliner Joey Olson (1+7=8) are the only other players with more than four points.
Those five were the main returning veterans for the Warriors, who also had to replace All-State honorable mention goaltender Jason Goldsmith. Shawn Storey (5-1-0, 2.00), Goldsmith’s backup last winter, has been solid thus far, with a .886 save percentage.

The Prowler's have been the only team in Section 8A to knock off the Warriors since the 2001-02 season at The Gardens in Warroad. That occurred in the 2006 Section 8A championship game back in late February, 2006. Michael Forney's heroic, overtime rebound goal in the fourth, extra session gave TRF its first Minnesota State H.S. Tournament bid since 1965.
Senior goaltender, Zane Gothberg, is widely considered the best in Minnesota hockey. Gothberg is a (A) rated goaltender in the NHL's Central Scouting Mid-Season list (Brock Nelson is also an "A" rater skater) for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft later next summer. Both Gothberg and Nelson have committed to the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux Men's hockey program.
Will Section 8A have two representatives in mid-March at the Minutemen's "Minnesota Mr. Hockey" banquet?
Time will tell.
The Prowlers are paced Mathew Lindquist and Micah Ranum each with 5 goals apiece with Ryan Crosson and Brady Johnson 3 goals.
So, tune in to exciting Section 8A action tonight as #3 Warroad hosts #7 Thief River Falls at The Gardens Arena in Warroad for a 7:30 PM tilt.

FollowThePuck.com's, Doug Hagen's Game Break:
#7. Thief River Falls Prowlers
(6-1-0) | at Warroad on Tuesday
Goals: Thief River Falls 28, Opponents 14
The Prowlers only loss this season has been to Roseau in their very first game. Since giving up six goals to the Rams, senior goaltender Zane Gothberg and Thief River Falls have given up eight goals in six games.
They shutout a good International Falls team 1-0 last Saturday.
I'm not quite sold on their ability to score goals but University of North Dakota recruit Zane Gothberg should be able to give them a chance to win every game. They will have their hands full against Brock Nelson, Brett Hebel, and the Warriors on Tuesday night.
The game is being broadcasted on both radio stations. KTRF (1230 AM) in Thief River Falls and KQ-92.5 in Warroad. The Minnesota Sports Broadcasting Network is also airing the game via webcast at http://www.mnsportsnetwork.com/.

Young EGF hockey team plays on despite loss of beloved coach
Tim Pesch dies midway through tournament
“I said, ‘See you in a couple hours,’ and went home to get something to eat,” Dale Pesch recalled Monday. “Everything seemed good, normal.” But Tim, 52, the baby in a family of eight hard-skating siblings, suffered a massive heart attack at home over the noon hour Saturday and died a short time later.

His East Grand Forks Squirts hockey team was down 4-1 after two periods Saturday morning against the Grand Forks Blues, an all-star team, so Coach Tim Pesch had a few words for his skaters.
“Boy, you guys are missing a heck of a good game,” he said, needling the youngsters about their tepid performance, appealing to their pride.
The team responded, scoring three goals to tie the game, then another a minute into overtime to win it. They celebrated briefly, but they had another game scheduled at 3 p.m.
In the coaches’ box, Dale Pesch talked briefly with Tim, his younger brother and fellow coach, about drills they wanted to work on after the weekend games.
“I said, ‘See you in a couple hours,’ and went home to get something to eat,” Dale Pesch recalled Monday. “Everything seemed good, normal.”
But Tim, 52, the baby in a family of eight hard-skating siblings, suffered a massive heart attack at home over the noon hour Saturday and died a short time later.
At the hospital, the family conferred, and Dale made the call: The kids would play the afternoon game.
They weren’t told about Coach Tim’s death until after the game.
Such a jolt
Tim Pesch was a standout hockey player at East Grand Forks Senior High, graduating in 1976. He was drafted by the St. Louis Blues and played in Canada until injuries forced him to think about another career.
An accomplished stone and brick mason, he stayed with hockey as a coach at various levels, hoping to develop some future stars. He and friends from high school regularly gathered for a pickup game.
“He was a pretty good hockey player in his day,” his brother said. “Hockey has always been important in our family.”
Tim was “the baby of the family, so this was such a jolt,” Dale said. “We didn’t expect it, though (heart disease) does run in the family. … Three uncles on our mother’s side didn’t make it to 55.”
Tim had coached the Squirts for four years, and Dale joined him this year. “He took care of the forwards, and I took care of defense,” Dale said.
“He was normal during the morning game Saturday. He didn’t say anything or act any differently. When he went home, Lori, his wife, was a little late coming home. She called him and asked if she should pick up something for dinner, but he said he was already making something.”
Lori was blocks from home when she called.
“When she got there, he was coming up the basement steps, and he couldn’t breathe,” Dale said. A 911 call brought medical technicians, who were able to get a faint pulse before racing Tim to the hospital. He was declared dead after further attempts to revive him.
His loss would be hard at any time, his brother said, but it’s especially difficult for the family as Christmas approaches.
“And his daughter just had a baby girl,” he said. “He was a grandpa for the first time.”
From his players, a pair of salutes
Tim and Dale had talked at a Friday night practice and again after the Saturday morning game about working on face-offs. They talked about getting former East Grand Forks and UND hockey player Donny Riendeau, a nephew, to help out.
“It was really something, how those kids came out for the third period Saturday morning and tied the game, then won it in overtime,” Dale said. “It was the first time they ever beat the Blues. They didn’t quit.”
Like others in the family, Tim approached the ice with intensity, “but he usually kept his cool pretty good. He always was a considerate guy, a guy who’d do anything for you — especially the kids we’re coaching now.”
After Dale made the decision to play the afternoon game against Moorhead, he asked a friend to take over the coaching duties.
“Tim would want them to play,” he said.
“The kids didn’t know that Tim had died. I got there late in the third period, and the kids and all the parents got together in the locker room.
“It was terrible. There was a lot of crying — kids and parents, too.”
The Squirts lost the Saturday afternoon game, but Sunday — after stepping onto the ice to form a circle and slap sticks in a UND Sioux-like tribute to their late coach — they cruised to a win over West Fargo.
And on Wednesday, at Tim Pesch’s funeral at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in East Grand Forks, his young skaters, 9 and 10 years old, will assemble again in their game jerseys to serve as honorary pallbearers.
