The Warroad Warrior Boys Hockey team knocked off key section rival Thief River Falls on Tuesday night 5-2.
The Warriors dominated most of the play all night long, but struggled at times finding control of the puck in front of the Prowler net. The first period ended even at one, with the Warriors clearly carrying play by outshooting the Prowlers 9-3. Eric Milbridge did a good job keeping the puck in the zone, he then carried the puck into the corner of the rink and made a nice pass to Nelson who put a backhand over the visiting goalie for the game's first goal. Thief River would knot the game at one late in the period when the Prowlers came in the Warroad zone on a two on one and Lindquist would rifle a shot past Jared Paquin to tie the game.
Warroad scored two goals in the second period to retake the lead. Bryce Ravendalen scored his 11th goal of the year, with the Warriors short two men, with a blistering shot over the shoulder of Prowler netminder Gothberg. Tai Larson then scored a close in shot on the power play late in the second to send the Warriors to the intermission up two goals.
John Hellquist scored after some hard corner work by himself and Andy Pelland as Pelland got the puck behind the Prowler net and fed Hellquist who banked a shot off the goalie for a three goal lead. That lead didn't hold up long as Thief River Falls scored just over one minute later on the power play to bring the score back to 4-2.
Then maybe on a more bizarre note, Warroad would finish the game scoring.
Brock Neslon picked up the puck on the side of the net and apparently put it top shelf into the Prowler net. The official waved the goal while the Warriors began celebrating, including the home team goaltender who had gone to the bench to celebrate. The Prowlers meanwhile, picked up the puck and raced the length of the ice to put the puck in the Warrior empty net. Then the whistle finally went. Following discussion with the three officials and after conferring with the goal judge, the Warriors were awarded the goal.
Jared Paquin had 8 saves on the night for the Warriors. Warroad outshot the Prowlers 33 to 10.
