Solving The Riddle Of Yourself; Not An Easy Task For Any Person

A Message From Pittsburgh Penguins Scout, Chuck "Ole Gringo" Grillo

Editor's Note by Tim Oshie: In your life, you have the opportunity to meet a handful of individuals who change your life. Chuck Grillo is one of them, not only who has changed my life, but my son, T.J.'s, as well. His wisdom, his inspirational passages, his zest for helping every single person he meets and his million-dollar smile persona fies the gentleman who self-proclaims himself as "Ole Gringo." The incredible conversations I've had with Gringo have revitalized my passions for life as a father, a coach, an educator and friend. The wisdom he's given T.J. has guided him on his journey as a hockey player, an ambassador and role model for life. I would be safe to say I'll never meet a friend with as much passion for life and young people than Chuck Grillo!

Enjoy.

By: Chuck Grillo

This was written while, "Sitting around one day thinking of draft picks that are a part of my life whether they want to be or don't want to be." They were drafted because they are smart, talented and they "had it all" as a high school or junior player. I do a lot of thinking about campers, potential draft picks and free agents that I care about. Build on what you have, keep reaching and climbing. Success is "right around the corner".

One person sees a player as a finesse player or numbers guy in his position and another sees him as a power forward, stay @ home defenseman, grinder or support player. We have goalies with all different styles. The player ends up saying, "I don't know who I am." Bottom line; it's good when you can play multiple positions, multiple styles and fit in for the good of the team.

The search for "who you are" has a better chance of being solved when you have a backup game or "game within your game" that buys you time. This is usually a game that makes you hard to play against and mistake free, a game that will always support your "A" game during your development years. Training beyond imagination brings you closer to solving who you are because you gain that psychological edge against your opponent in life knowing you worked harder than they did to be who you are.

Some coaches/scouts/managers learn from their experiences as players. Triumphs, trials and tribulations as young players have given more than one coach/scout/manager a different, and very healthy, perspective in the way they approach and handle young players. The majority of those who faced more than their share of adversity and confusion lean toward the approach of no expectations, dry erase board with some guidelines, and the freedom to play and express their unique skills. They recognize the unique skills of a player, they develop a relationship, and reward them properly.

Most young people are naïve, some have too much too soon, and some develop relationships that take away from their game. The best relationships in life are when two people empower each other to be what they can be. Relationships should enhance careers. Some players party often, and too hard, while success steers their subconscious mind toward sophistication and complacency. Some are misled as to what it takes to "be a pro; a professional person and player". Some go through a divorce setting with their parents. Some use the divorce setting as a crutch to cover mistakes and underachieving, while the divorce really this has nothing to do with it. The stable ones look @ divorce as a situation where, even though a divorce can get ugly, they have a chance to have two sets of supporting parents down the road. "Old wounds rarely heal, but success helps you to forget."

Most players face very little adversity coming through the system. They move on to junior, college and pro where people make a living picking their personal makeup and game apart. Scrutiny becomes more intense during a player's draft year and the years after they are drafting. If a player feels tired, he is no doubt suffering from all the scrutiny and adversity. Players fail to solve the "riddle of themselves" when they fail to see the importance of "just being yourself, competing and playing hard with composure and confidence". My son, Dino, says it best in these situations. His best answer to a bad situation is "just play and everything will fall in place". Players are fortunate to have gone through some of this scrutiny during their early years to prepare them for what is coming @ some point in your career. Hopefully they go through enough during their early years to recognize that the scrutiny, adversity and confusion they went through will serve them well in future years. Most players have yet to experience what it is like to have their game and personal make up "picked apart". They would have to do something “out of the ordinary” first so there is a higher level of expectation and accountability.

One of the biggest mistakes players, mentors and managers make is not taking a risk to avoid making a mistake; however, learning the consequences of each risk is paramount. The bottom line is there are very few successful people in life who are not risk takers. You don't play/coach/manage/ mentor to not get second guessed, you don't play not to lose. You train, practice and play to win. Most players don't see the difference in their conditioning level until they get themselves in better shape than the year before or they are in a setting where they can readily see others doing a certain exercise far better than they do that same exercise. This can be on ice or in an off ice. Awareness and exposure are necessary components to development. Reaction levels to exposure and awareness are different for every player. The bottom line is "what are you doing about your deficiencies that will enhance your assets"?

Any athlete, coach or mentor is @ their best when they are like the joyous, carefree little guy playing on an outdoor rink who doesn't worry about making a mistake. Don't ever lose that vibrant “ninth grade personality” where everything was new, fun, vibrant and an adventure in to the unknown.

Put mistakes behind you and recognize where you are today in the game knowing that your real game will come if you keep working hard while waiting for your physical growth to meet your coordination. Get in to goal setting, etiquette, communication skills and developing a support system that you can build on as your career and life evolves. I've learned through the years that one conversation, email or letter to a young person @ the right time can transform a life. This is why I keep writing and talking to young people. I do it with the sincere wish that young people buy in to what it takes to be a "real person".

Pro players who work with young kids, and develop charitable foundations before they are established, put themselves on the line to be even more accountable. Try to find some time to work with kids in the youth program. You will find that your sub conscious mind will copy most every thing you tell them and you will start performing @ a higher level. Working with young people teaches you to "give back" and you learn early on that there is more to life than hockey. This will enhance your game.

Once your life is on display everywhere (Internet, media, TV) it's going to have its effects. You have to watch what you do, what you say, what you wear and you can't necessarily have the best time. There are situations when you want to let loose and have fun, but you can't. So you suppress it. Eventually it creates an alter ego and you'll have situations where guys end up doing something stupid or out of the ordinary. You have to guard against this.

It is great to have players who bring their own edge to the team. Do this and you will find that edge will start to appear on your teammates. You are @ your best when you play with an "edge"; a little "dirt" in your game. Players, who study the game, define their role and develop a game within their game, have more success in any team setting. The good ones learn to separate offense from defense knowing they have to be good @ both. They learn that when one is not going good the other can support their career.

In the end, it's the players who are "real people" who end up creating the fiber of the team; not just the player. The same goes for new buildings, locker rooms and uniforms. It's not the building, locker room or new jersey that makes the program; it's the people; the people that administrate, manage, coach, support staff and play the game. We were put on this earth to "anoint ourselves" by maximizing our unique skills and managing our liabilities. There is no room for mediocrity.

Have a great year, and send me an update by text, email, call or all of the above. Keep working hard; stay intense and you will see a lot of good things happen in your life. The strong survive in this game.

I enjoyed typing this because I know deep down the good that can come out of communication. That gives me a special feeling inside; just knowing I took the time to do something out of the ordinary for a young person I care for. It's an easy way for me to build my "net worth".

A Game? No, It’s a Life. A Tribute To Warroad - Roseau Hockey Rivalry

Courtesy of The New York Times

Published: January 26, 2007

Editors Note: This story was written by Chip McGrath last season. It takes a look at life and hockey in the communities of Warroad and Roseau, two very storied hockey towns. Prior to that game last January 11, 2007, I produced a special event called, "A Night With The Warroad / Roseau Hockey Legends." The event drew numerous onlookers as over 18 hockey legends gathered for a roundtable discussion and reflected on the rivalry and how significant hockey is to these two towns of hockey mystique.

AT this time of year there isn’t a lot to do in Warroad, Minn., a little town at the southwestern end of the Lake of the Woods, just a few miles from the Canadian border. There is no movie theater, the one bowling alley closed a while ago and the nearest shopping mall is in Grand Forks, N.D., two and half hours away across a windswept plain. You can snowmobile, but the snowfall has been a little skimpy so far this winter. Or you can ice fish, though until just a couple of weeks ago, when the temperature finally plunged to double digits below, it might have been unwise to drive a pickup out onto the lake.

Or like many Warroad residents, you can flock to the Gardens, the town’s main ice rink, especially on a night when the Warroad High School Warriors are playing. What basketball is to Indiana and football is to Texas, hockey is to Minnesota, a passion so intense that it borders on civic religion. And even in this hockey-mad state, Warroad, which bills itself as Hockeytown U.S.A. and displays a pair of crossed hockey sticks on the town water tower, is legendary for its fervor.

The Gardens is a kind of oasis — a place to see your neighbors, escape from the grind of a long northern winter and even enjoy a vicarious thrill or two, watching the Warriors cream Crookston or Thief River. Teenagers flirt here. Friends catch up on the news. Mothers bring their kids and let them zip around the lobby on their wheeled sneakers. The railbirds, the guys too nervous to sit, stand in the corner and never take their eyes off the ice.

“What else are you going to do up here?” said Ruben Bjorkman, a longtime observer of the local hockey culture. “It’s cold.”

Balance Keys Warroad In Win Over EGF Green Wave

Courtesy of Grand Forks Herald

By: Virg Foss, Special To The Herald

Star players such as UND's T.J. Oshie and St. Cloud State's Aaron Marvin were key figures on the last state championship team from Warroad High School.

If balance is to be the byword for the Warriors this season, they showed plenty of it Friday night in skating to a 5-2 Minnesota Section 8A victory over East Grand Forks Senior High in the Civic Center.

Five different players chipped in with a goal each and 10 Warriors were in the scoring column as Warroad improved to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in section play while dropping Senior High to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in section play.

Bryce Ravndalen, Brock Nelson, Andy Pelland, Jeremy Hahn and Andy Stoskopf were Warroad's goal scorers, while Michael Pieper, Brett Hebel, Jon Helquist, Eric Milbridge and Ian Mosher had a single assist apiece.

Sophomore Jake Useldinger scored both Green Wave goals, his first tying the game at 1 late in the first period and his second narrowing Warroad's lead to 4-2 after two periods.

Warroad Thumps TRF, 5-2, In Key Section 8A Win

Courtesy Of Warroad Black & Gold Web Site:

The Warroad Warrior Boys Hockey team knocked off key section rival Thief River Falls on Tuesday night 5-2.

The Warriors dominated most of the play all night long, but struggled at times finding control of the puck in front of the Prowler net. The first period ended even at one, with the Warriors clearly carrying play by outshooting the Prowlers 9-3. Eric Milbridge did a good job keeping the puck in the zone, he then carried the puck into the corner of the rink and made a nice pass to Nelson who put a backhand over the visiting goalie for the game's first goal. Thief River would knot the game at one late in the period when the Prowlers came in the Warroad zone on a two on one and Lindquist would rifle a shot past Jared Paquin to tie the game.

Warroad scored two goals in the second period to retake the lead. Bryce Ravendalen scored his 11th goal of the year, with the Warriors short two men, with a blistering shot over the shoulder of Prowler netminder Gothberg. Tai Larson then scored a close in shot on the power play late in the second to send the Warriors to the intermission up two goals.

John Hellquist scored after some hard corner work by himself and Andy Pelland as Pelland got the puck behind the Prowler net and fed Hellquist who banked a shot off the goalie for a three goal lead. That lead didn't hold up long as Thief River Falls scored just over one minute later on the power play to bring the score back to 4-2.

Then maybe on a more bizarre note, Warroad would finish the game scoring.

Brock Neslon picked up the puck on the side of the net and apparently put it top shelf into the Prowler net. The official waved the goal while the Warriors began celebrating, including the home team goaltender who had gone to the bench to celebrate. The Prowlers meanwhile, picked up the puck and raced the length of the ice to put the puck in the Warrior empty net. Then the whistle finally went. Following discussion with the three officials and after conferring with the goal judge, the Warriors were awarded the goal.

Jared Paquin had 8 saves on the night for the Warriors. Warroad outshot the Prowlers 33 to 10.

Upstart Knights Overwhelm Green Wave

Courtesy of Grand Forks Herald

By: Kevin Fee

Despite a fast start to the season, a young Grand Forks Central team knows it has some growing to do.

“We struggled last year,” Central junior forward Tanner Spicer said. “This year we're flowing. We just have to keep going. We just have to come out every night and play hard, because we're not that good that we don't have to play every night.”

Spicer scored a goal and assisted on two others to help lift the Knights to a 7-2 boys hockey victory against a weary East Grand Forks Senior High team on Monday in Purpur Arena.

The victory lifted the surprising Knights to 6-1 overall. Senior High, which was playing its third game in four days, dropped to 4-4.

Ravndalen 4 Goals, Warriors Thump Hibbing 6-2

Courtesy of Warroad Black & Gold

The Warroad Warriors came out dominating the play, only to give up a goal on the first shift of the night. But that would be the end of any major celebration by the Hibbing hockey club on this night. Bryce Ravndalen put on a tremendous offensive display as he scored four consecutive Warroad goals to lead the Warriors to the 6-2 win over the Bluejackets.

Hibbing scored the first goal of the game just thirty four seconds into the game, after the Warrior started out putting pressure in the Hibbing end of the rink. That lead would hold up until the 9:44 mark of the first period before Bryce Ravndalen scored on rebound shot to tie the game at one. Just over three minutes later, Ravndalen would undress the Hibbing defenseman and beat the Bluejacket net minder high on the short side to give the Warriors their first lead of the game.

Warriors, Paquin, Shut Out Greenway Raiders

Courtesy of Warroad Black & Gold

Jared Paquin would stop all 12 shots thrown his way on this night to earn his second Varsity shutout of the season. The Warriors would get goals from five different players to blow past the Raiders 6-0. Jon Hellquist led the way in scoring for the Warriors, tallying two goals.

The Warriors would score in the first period as Bryce Ravendalen, on a hard shot from the slot, beat the Greenway night minder low on the stick side to put Warroad up by one at the end of one period, Mark McDonald assisted on the play. John Hellquist would score his first goal on a nice rebound shot to put the Warriors up by two, with Brett Hebel and McDonald getting the assists. Bucky Storey would then score his first varsity goal on a nice finish, with assists to Michael Pieper and Alex Johnston to put the home team up by three after two periods of play.

Pirates Fall To Fargo North

Courtesy of The Crookston Times

By Jason Ivanitz, Sports Editor

Raising a young team can be a difficult task, especially early on in the season. Pirates boys' hockey head coach, Jon Bittner knows that better than anybody as his young Pirates team fell to Fargo North, 3-1 on Thursday at the Crookston Civic Arena.

"We are making progress and we are starting to figure things out," Bittner said. "After the game, we kept positive and told the kids to keep working and we will see them tomorrow at practice."

Crookston was outshot in every period and Fargo North picked up their first goal at the 8:22 mark of the first period when Kyle Berg beat Pirates goalie Matt Grove for the goal. Assists on the goal went to Nick Boe and Nick Brenneman.

McMorrow Wins It For Park Rapids

Courtesy of Grand Forks Herald

By Tom Miller, Herald Staff Writer

Park Rapids sophomore defenseman Kevin McMorrow described the end of regulation Friday against East Grand Forks Senior High as heartbreaking.

It was an interesting choice of words as McMorrow provided the heartbreaking goal later in the game. McMorrow scored a wraparound goal with 31 seconds left in overtime to lift Park Rapids to a 6-5 win over the Green Wave at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

“I grabbed the loose puck at the blue line and carried it in,” McMorrow said. “I saw a lot of bodies in the slot, so I brought it around the net and stuffed it. It was wide open.”

Courtesy of Thief River Falls Times

By: TRF Times Reports

Two losses were tagged on Thief River Falls during a weekend boys high school hockey trip to the Twin Cities area. The Blake School scored with one second left in overtime to edge the Prowlers 3-2 Friday night. They fell to St. Paul Johnson 6-3 the next afternoon.

Five games into the 2007-08 season, the Prowlers have just one win to their credit. Three of those four losses have come at the hands of state-ranked teams. Jesse Castle’s first period goal gave Thief River Falls a 1-0 lead against Blake. The Bears went ahead 2-0 in the second period, with the Prowlers’ Aaron Langan tying it at 3:59 of the third period.
